As a consequence of her having been in practice advising listed and private companies and her various roles in commerce, Marie-Aurélie has considerable experience and expertise in all aspects of general commercial law and transactions.

She has also served in various capacities on and represented a number of committees and forums including the Trade Interest Group of the Law Society; Immigration Interest Group of the Law Society; Director of the French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industries; trustee of various trusts including the Swiss Re Pension Fund and the Sakhumzi Foundation Empowerment Trust; Women in Law; Competition Law Committee of the Law Society; executive member of the Company Law Committee of the Law Society.

Daniel de Wet Hayward
(BA LLB, H.Dip Tax Law and Admitted Solicitor in England and Wales)

Daniel has been a practising attorney since 1991.  He practiced in the commercial law department of Norton Rose Inc, where he was involved in all aspects of commercial transactions.  He was the founding member of Girard Hayward Inc in 2012.  He specialises in transactions relating to private equity; corporate finance; Black economic empowerment; cross border transaction with specific focus on Sub-Sahara Africa; exchange control; management buy-outs; private equity; transactional mining transactions and mergers & acquisitions.

Ernie Lai King
Ernie Lai King is the Managing Director of 1 Road Consulting.

Ernie has 40 years of experience as a tax expert, focusing on mergers and acquisitions (local and cross-border), dispute resolution, opinions, structured finance and international tax. He served as Head of Tax and Asia-Africa practice group for several Top 4 Law Firms and was the group tax consultant of two major listed top 20 companies. He has extensive experience in the commercial sector.

Past positions held:

  • Member of the Income Tax Special Court of Appeal (a State President appointment);
  • Council member of St Johns College;
  • Board member of NCP and Karbochem divisions of Sentrachem Ltd;
  • Chairman of the South African Chamber of Business Tax Committee;
  • Board member of SA Institute of Tax Paractitioners;

He engages with the Commissioner’s Office of the South African Revenue Service and National Treasury on tax policy and new tax legislation. Prior to the introduction of Capital Gains Tax (CGT) into South Africa, he was invited to participate in nationwide seminars on CGT conducted by the Office of the Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service, with specific implication of the impact of CGT on trusts.

Ernie is recognised as a respected thought leader and is regularly quoted on tax and economic issues in the media – print, radio and television. He has received awards such as:

  • Dealmakers annual awards 2013 – Individual Dealmaker of the Year (SA);
  • Best Lawyers of South Africa award for tax;

He authored the South African Chapter of the Cambridge University Press Treatise, “A Global Analysis of Tax Treaty Disputes“, convened by the London School of Economics – Law Department.
